Tell W3C: We don't want the Hollyweb

From March 22nd

Hollywood's latest ploy to take over the Web? Use its influence at the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) to weave Digital Restrictions Management (DRM) into HTML5 -- in other words, into the very fabric of the Web. Sign Defective by Design's petition to say no to the Hollyweb and keep DRM in HTML5. With your help, we can reach 50,000 signers by the International Day Against DRM on May 3rd.

LibrePlanet 2013 conference

On March 23 and 24, the FSF held its yearly software freedom conference, LibrePlanet. This year's theme was "Commit Change": a focus on making connections to other movements and building diversity within free software. We at the FSF are very happy with how the conference turned out. Google backslides on federated instant messaging, on purpose?

From March 15th

Turns out, Google has started blocking invites sent from non-Google Jabber servers. Subscription requests just disappear mysteriously, confusing both users and server operators. This change is akin to Google no longer accepting incoming e-mail for @gmail.com addresses from non-Google domains.

Petition to protect the right to unlock cellphones garners 111,000+ signers; White House must now respond

From February 28th

On February 13th, we asked you to join in with thousands of others to call on the White House to protect users where the Copyright Office had failed. Because of your actions, the White House now must respond to the call to fix the DMCA anti-circumvention exemptions list in order to protect the right to unlock cell phones.

Interview with Adam Hyde of Booktype

2012 Free Software Award winners announced

From March 23rd

Richard Stallman announced the winners of the FSF's annual Free Software Awards at a ceremony on Saturday, March 23rd, held during the LibrePlanet 2013 conference. The Award for the Advancement of Free Software was given to Dr. Fernando Perez for IPython, a tool for scientific analysis, and the Award for Projects of Social Benefit was given to OpenMRS, a medical record-keeping system being implemented in the world's poorest countries.

New and improved label for DRM-free files

From March 7th

We recently announced the DRM-free label, an effort to create recognizable branding for providers of DRM-free files to quickly communicate to users that they don't have to worry about being encumbered by restrictive technologies such as Digital Restrictions Management. Today, we're happy to share with you the next version of the DRM-free label, immediately available for use in multiple languages and styles.

Document Freedom Day: 2013

This year the campaign aims to have more events, in additional locations. In 2012 groups of volunteers ran 54 events in 23 different countries, including Brussels, Colombia, and Indonesia.

To help, join our weekly IRC meetings on Fridays from 2:00pm to 5:00pm EDT (18:00 to 21:00 UTC) . Meetings take place in the #fsf channel on irc.gnu.org, and usually include a handful of regulars as well as newcomers. Everyone's welcome.

GNU Toolchain update

This month has been quiet for the GNU toolchain. The GCC sources are still closed to new features, pending the creation of the 4.8 branch.

LibrePlanet software freedom conference announces line-up

BOSTON, Massachusetts, USA -- Friday, March 8, 2013 -- The Free Software Foundation (FSF) today announced the line-up for its upcoming LibrePlanet 2013 conference, to be held in Cambridge, MA at the Harvard Science Center on March 23-24.

The FSF describes LibrePlanet as the place where global free software community members and newcomers meet together to learn from each other, share accomplishments and face challenges. This is the fifth annual LibrePlanet conference.

"This year's LibrePlanet conference is perfect for all experience levels. Whether you're interested in learning more about what free software is and why you should use it, or whether you've been contributing code to free software projects for years, there's something for everyone at LibrePlanet," said Libby Reinish, an FSF campaigns manager.

Keynote speakers for the event include Foundation president, Richard Stallman, who led the development of the free software GNU operating system and started the free software movement, Karen Sandler, executive director of the GNOME Foundation, and Leslie Hawthorn, an internationally known community manager, speaker and author who now manages community action and impact at Red Hat, Inc.

This year, the conference theme is "Commit Change," and the program focuses on technology's role in struggles for justice, community, and freedom. From software developers to activists, academics to computer users, this convergence is about working together for software freedom.

Throughout the conference, over 25 sessions in three simultaneous tracks will feature workshops and sessions like, "Free software communities and the cloud," "Demystifying Blender: Quick ways to get into 3D Graphics with free software," and "Outreach Program for Women: Lessons in Collaboration." On Saturday, the FSF will announce the winners of its annual Award for Projects of Social Benefit and Award for the Advancement of Free Software. Sunday will feature a special workshop by Upstream University, with the goal of training students and developers to contribute code or documentation upstream in a free software project.

"We are at a critical moment for software freedom. Companies like Microsoft and Apple are looking for sneaky ways to increase their stranglehold on freedom by locking down their computers and spying on their users. This is a must-attend event for anyone who values free speech and privacy in the electronic era," said John Sullivan, executive director of the Foundation.

LibrePlanet in three weeks (3/23-3/24)! Sign up by Thursday to get a shirt

Hello ,

March 23 and 24 are coming up fast, and there are already 150 people signed up for LibrePlanet 2013. Attendees are coming to Cambridge, Massachusetts from around the US as well as far-flung countries. So many free software lovers coming together to swap stories and share ideas!

Our goal is to make this the most exciting and mind-expanding LibrePlanet conference so far, so we decided that the t-shirt would also be the best-looking. We think we were successful, but you can judge for yourself from the image on the right. We're putting in the printing order this week in order to have the shirts in time for the conference, so...

But there's obviously more to LibrePlanet than looking amazing. Libby is finalizing the program now, and we have some new sessions to feature:

The announcement and bestowing of the Award for the Advancement of Free Software and the Award for Free Software Projects of Social Benefit. Winners are kept secret until they accept their awards at the conference.
Upstream University, a seminar where developers will learn to contribute more successfully and efficiently to free software. This requires separate registration and space is limited, so sign up now!.
A demonstration of LulzBot, the 3D printer that runs on 100% free software. LulzBot is the first piece of hardware to earn the FSF's Respects Your Freedom certification.

I'm sad that I won't be able to be at all of these things, but Libby and I will be busy keeping the conference running smoothly and making sure you all are having a great time. It's going to be a lot of work, but we're looking forward to it.

FSFE suggests you take this day as an opportunity to say "thank you" to one of the dedicated, hard-working people in the free software community. Keep the pressure on the White House and US Copyright Office to fix anti-circumvention provisions

When the Copyright Office announced its updated DMCA exemptions list, we were saddened to find that the office had abdicated its duty on multiple fronts. While that sad result was announced back in October, the downgraded exemptions list has just now come into effect. To resist this, you can sign the petition to reinstate the right to unlock phones.

LibrePlanet featured resource: Coreboot installation party at LibrePlanet 2013

Every month on LibrePlanet, we highlight one resource that is interesting and useful -- often one that could use your help.

For this month, we are highlighting the page for the Coreboot install party at the LibrePlanet 2013 conference on March 23-24. Coreboot is a free software boot firmware replacement that we're very excited about, because it makes it possible for many machines to run with 100% free software, all the way down to the firmware level.

At the install party, experts will guide you in installing Coreboot with all-free firmware on your machines. Make sure to read the page if you plan to attend the install party, because only a few types of machines will be supported. Even if you can't make it to the conference, you'll find it to be a useful resource about Coreboot.

This month, we welcome Mark Veltzer as a new co-maintainer of GNU grep.

I'd like to specially mention Texinfo 5.0, the first release in Texinfo in too many years. It is a complete reimplementation of makeinfo, merging in texi2html features and more, while retaining practical compatibility, primarily thanks to the efforts of Patrice Dumas.
