Tell W3C: We don't want the Hollyweb

From March 22nd

Hollywood's latest ploy to take over the Web? Use its influence at the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) to weave Digital Restrictions Management (DRM) into HTML5 -- in other words, into the very fabric of the Web. Sign Defective by Design's petition to say no to the Hollyweb and keep DRM in HTML5. With your help, we can reach 50,000 signers by the International Day Against DRM on May 3rd.

LibrePlanet 2013 conference

From March 24th

On March 23 and 24, the FSF held its yearly software freedom conference, LibrePlanet. This year's theme was "Commit Change": a focus on making connections to other movements and building diversity within free software. We at the FSF are very happy with how the conference turned out. If you weren't there this year, we hope to see you in 2014!

See our blog post from the first day of the conference (lots of photos inside):

An article about the conference by Open Media Boston:

If you would like a LibrePlanet shirt, it's not too late:

Google backslides on federated instant messaging, on purpose?

From March 15th

Turns out, Google has started blocking invites sent from non-Google Jabber servers. Subscription requests just disappear mysteriously, confusing both users and server operators. This change is akin to Google no longer accepting incoming e-mail for @gmail.com addresses from non-Google domains.

Petition to protect the right to unlock cellphones garners 111,000+ signers; White House must now respond

From February 28th

On February 13th, we asked you to join in with thousands of others to call on the White House to protect users where the Copyright Office had failed. Because of your actions, the White House now must respond to the call to fix the DMCA anti-circumvention exemptions list in order to protect the right to unlock cell phones.

Interview with Adam Hyde of Booktype

From March 21st

This is the latest installment of our Licensing and Compliance Lab's series on free software developers who choose GNU licenses for their works. In this edition, we interviewed Adam Hyde via email. Adam is the founder of Booktype -- a book production platform released under AGPLv3, as well as Book Sprints, and FLOSS Manuals.

2012 Free Software Award winners announced

From March 23rd

Richard Stallman announced the winners of the FSF's annual Free Software Awards at a ceremony on Saturday, March 23rd, held during the LibrePlanet 2013 conference. The Award for the Advancement of Free Software was given to Dr. Fernando Perez for IPython, a tool for scientific analysis, and the Award for Projects of Social Benefit was given to OpenMRS, a medical record-keeping system being implemented in the world's poorest countries.

New and improved label for DRM-free files

From March 7th

We recently announced the DRM-free label, an effort to create recognizable branding for providers of DRM-free files to quickly communicate to users that they don't have to worry about being encumbered by restrictive technologies such as Digital Restrictions Management. Today, we're happy to share with you the next version of the DRM-free label, immediately available for use in multiple languages and styles.

Document Freedom Day: 2013

By FSF Europe, from February 26th

This year the campaign aims to have more events, in additional locations. In 2012 groups of volunteers ran 54 events in 23 different countries, including Brussels, Colombia, and Indonesia.

Trisquel 6.0 LTS "Toutatis" has arrived!

From March 9th

This long awaited release is based on Ubuntu Precise, and as usual comes full of free software goodness. We continue to provide an easy to use classic desktop experience complete with full-featured browsing, office, communications and social networking utilities. Download it while it is hot!

May 2012: RMS at the Fórum da Revista Espírito Livre, in Vila Velha

RMS was in Vila Velha, Brazil, on 29 May 2012, to speak on the free software movement, at the second edition of the Fórum da Revista Espírito Livre, to a diverse audience of about 500 students, teachers, and free software activists.

Join the FSF and friends in updating the Free Software Directory

Tens of thousands of people visit directory.fsf.org each month to discover free software. Each entry in the Directory contains a wealth of useful information, from basic category and descriptions to version control, IRC channels, documentation, and licensing. The Free Software Directory has been a great resource to software users over the past decade, but it needs your help staying up-to-date with new and exciting free software projects.

To help, join our weekly IRC meetings on Fridays from 2:00pm to 5:00pm EDT (18:00 to 21:00 UTC) . Meetings take place in the #fsf channel on irc.gnu.org, and usually include a handful of regulars as well as newcomers. Everyone's welcome.

LibrePlanet featured resource: End Software Patents group

Every month on LibrePlanet, we highlight one resource that is interesting and useful -- often one that could use your help.

For this month, we are highlighting the LibrePlanet group page those who participate in the End Software Patents campaign. ESP works to abolish all software patents, rather than engaging in the hopeless task of swatting individual patents. There are lots of ways to get involved with this important effort. Check out the group!

Do you have a suggestion for next month's featured resource? Let us know at campaigns@fsf.org.

Nearly all GNU software is available from http://ftp.gnu.org/gnu/, or preferably one of its mirrors (http://www.gnu.org/prep/ftp.html). You can use the url http://ftpmirror.gnu.org/ to be automatically redirected to a (hopefully) nearby and up-to-date mirror.

This month, we welcome Cynthia Rempel as the new maintainer of the pgccfd document and Jeffrin Jose as the new maintainer of GNU dap (in addition to already maintaining GNU trueprint, with a new release this month).

A number of GNU packages, as well as the GNU operating system as a whole, are looking for maintainers and other assistance. Please see http://www.gnu.org/server/takeaction.html#unmaint if you'd like to help. The general page on how to help GNU is at http://www.gnu.org/help/help.html. To submit new packages to the GNU operating system, see http://www.gnu.org/help/evaluation.html.

As always, please feel free to write to me, karl@gnu.org, with any GNUish questions or suggestions for future installments.

GNU Toolchain update

By Nick Clifton, from March 18th

The GNU toolchain refers to the part of the GNU system which is used for building programs. These components of GNU are together often on other systems and for compiling programs for other platforms.

This month has been quiet for the GNU toolchain. The GCC sources are still closed to new features, pending the creation of the 4.8 branch.

For immediate release: LibrePlanet software freedom conference announces line-up

You can view this press release online at http://www.fsf.org/news/libreplanet-software-freedom-conference-announces-line-up

LibrePlanet software freedom conference announces line-up

BOSTON, Massachusetts, USA -- Friday, March 8, 2013 -- The Free Software Foundation (FSF) today announced the line-up for its upcoming LibrePlanet 2013 conference, to be held in Cambridge, MA at the Harvard Science Center on March 23-24.

The FSF describes LibrePlanet as the place where global free software community members and newcomers meet together to learn from each other, share accomplishments and face challenges. This is the fifth annual LibrePlanet conference.

"This year's LibrePlanet conference is perfect for all experience levels. Whether you're interested in learning more about what free software is and why you should use it, or whether you've been contributing code to free software projects for years, there's something for everyone at LibrePlanet," said Libby Reinish, an FSF campaigns manager.

Keynote speakers for the event include Foundation president, Richard Stallman, who led the development of the free software GNU operating system and started the free software movement, Karen Sandler, executive director of the GNOME Foundation, and Leslie Hawthorn, an internationally known community manager, speaker and author who now manages community action and impact at Red Hat, Inc.

This year, the conference theme is "Commit Change," and the program focuses on technology's role in struggles for justice, community, and freedom. From software developers to activists, academics to computer users, this convergence is about working together for software freedom.

Throughout the conference, over 25 sessions in three simultaneous tracks will feature workshops and sessions like, "Free software communities and the cloud," "Demystifying Blender: Quick ways to get into 3D Graphics with free software," and "Outreach Program for Women: Lessons in Collaboration." On Saturday, the FSF will announce the winners of its annual Award for Projects of Social Benefit and Award for the Advancement of Free Software. Sunday will feature a special workshop by Upstream University, with the goal of training students and developers to contribute code or documentation upstream in a free software project.

"We are at a critical moment for software freedom. Companies like Microsoft and Apple are looking for sneaky ways to increase their stranglehold on freedom by locking down their computers and spying on their users. This is a must-attend event for anyone who values free speech and privacy in the electronic era," said John Sullivan, executive director of the Foundation.

LibrePlanet 2013 will be live-streamed at http://libreplanet.org/wiki/Watch_Live. More information about LibrePlanet 2013: Commit Change can be found at: http://libreplanet.org/2013.

About the Free Software Foundation

The Free Software Foundation, founded in 1985, is dedicated to promoting computer users' right to use, study, copy, modify, and redistribute computer programs. The FSF promotes the development and use of free (as in freedom) software -- particularly the GNU operating system and its GNU/Linux variants -- and free documentation for free software. The FSF also helps to spread awareness of the ethical and political issues of freedom in the use of software, and its Web sites, located at fsf.org and gnu.org, are an important source of information about GNU/Linux. Donations to support the FSF's work can be made at http://donate.fsf.org. Its headquarters are in Boston, MA, USA.

About the GNU Operating System and Linux

Richard Stallman announced in September 1983 the plan to develop a free software Unix-like operating system called GNU. GNU is the only operating system developed specifically for the sake of users' freedom. See http://www.gnu.org/gnu/the-gnu-project.html.

In 1992, the essential components of GNU were complete, except for one, the kernel. When in 1992 the kernel Linux was re-released under the GNU GPL, making it free software, the combination of GNU and Linux formed a complete free operating system, which made it possible for the first time to run a PC without non-free software. This combination is the GNU/Linux system. For more explanation, see http://www.gnu.org/gnu/gnu-linux-faq.html.

LibrePlanet in three weeks (3/23-3/24)! Sign up by Thursday to get a shirt

LibrePlanet 2013 t-shirt

Hello ,

March 23 and 24 are coming up fast, and there are already 150 people signed up for LibrePlanet 2013. Attendees are coming to Cambridge, Massachusetts from around the US as well as far-flung countries. So many free software lovers coming together to swap stories and share ideas!

Our goal is to make this the most exciting and mind-expanding LibrePlanet conference so far, so we decided that the t-shirt would also be the best-looking. We think we were successful, but you can judge for yourself from the image on the right. We're putting in the printing order this week in order to have the shirts in time for the conference, so...

Sign up by this Thursday if you want one of these shirts!

But there's obviously more to LibrePlanet than looking amazing. Libby is finalizing the program now, and we have some new sessions to feature:

I'm sad that I won't be able to be at all of these things, but Libby and I will be busy keeping the conference running smoothly and making sure you all are having a great time. It's going to be a lot of work, but we're looking forward to it.

By the way, the conference costs nothing for FSF members. So if you've been thinking about becoming one, now is the time. Click here to join our community of members.

Three more weeks! If you've got any questions before then, reply to this email or visit the #libreplanet IRC channel on irc.freenode.org to chat with other attendees.

LibrePlanet is a yearly conference in Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA, where the global free software community comes together to learn from each other, face challenges and welcome newcomers.

If you're interested in technology's role in struggles for justice, community, and freedom, then you will find a lot to be excited about at LibrePlanet. Sign up by March 6th if you'd like a LibrePlanet 2013 t-shirt.

Our blog posts about LibrePlanet:

Mako Hill remembers Aaron Swartz

By Benjamin Mako Hill, from January 24th

Mako writes: "I have spent hours (days?) reading and thinking about Aaron over the last two weeks. Although I suspect I may never feel ready, there are several things I want to say about Aaron's death, about Aaron's work, and about what Aaron means to me."

Only Gandalf can protect Europe from the unitary patent

By Gérald Sédrati-Dinet, from February 24th

Now that, despite all legal, political and economic issues, the European Parliament has approved the regulation on the unitary patent, it is time to move away from the legislative battle. It is time now to see whether and how Gandalf's magical powers can overcome dark forces of Mordor.

Winners announced for free software gaming's highest honor, the Liberated Pixel Cup

From February 22nd

We're proud to announce the completion of the first LPC, a design competition of free software video games using only freely licensed art and media. Thank you to the donors who gave to the FSF to support this effort!

See more details in our press release:

Announcing the Empowermentors Collective: a group for women of color and queer people of color

From January 31st

If you are a woman of color or queer person of color in the free software or free culture community and are interested in being a part of the Empowermentors Collective, please join the mailing list and the #empowermentors IRC channel on freenode. If you are an ally to these issues, please help spread the word!

The Empowermentors Collective is holding a social dinner for members at LibrePlanet 2013. The dinner will take place on Saturday, March 23rd after the conference closes for the day. Find out more and RSVP:

GNU Press discounts Bison Manual!

From February 19th

To make room for the updated version, GNU Press is slashing the price of the Bison Manual, version 1.875, by nearly 50%! The manual is great for C programmers or students interested in learning about and implementing a wide variety of language parsers.

FSFE asks you to show your love for free software!

From February 14th

On February 14th, Free Software Foundation Europe asks all free software users to show their appreciation for free software. FSFE suggests you take this day as an opportunity to say "thank you" to one of the dedicated, hard-working people in the free software community. At the FSF, we displayed a giant heart on our front page and individual staff thanked some of their favorite developers.

Keep the pressure on the White House and US Copyright Office to fix anti-circumvention provisions

From February 13th

When the Copyright Office announced its updated DMCA exemptions list, we were saddened to find that the office had abdicated its duty on multiple fronts. While that sad result was announced back in October, the downgraded exemptions list has just now come into effect. To resist this, you can sign the petition to reinstate the right to unlock phones.

Announcing status.fsf.org: Our new home for microblogging

From February 7th

StatusNet is free software microblogging, similar to Twitter but without requiring nonfree JavaScript or trust in a single Web site. The FSF is excited to be microblogging from our own StatusNet instance, from now on.

FSF licensing team: What we did in 2012 and why it matters for 2013

By Joshua Gay, from January 31st

The past nine months have been an awesome and gratifying experience of doing important, specialized work defending free software. In order to continue this work and meet the many other goals we have set for ourselves, we need your support.

LibrePlanet featured resource: Coreboot installation party at LibrePlanet 2013

Every month on LibrePlanet, we highlight one resource that is interesting and useful -- often one that could use your help.

For this month, we are highlighting the page for the Coreboot install party at the LibrePlanet 2013 conference on March 23-24. Coreboot is a free software boot firmware replacement that we're very excited about, because it makes it possible for many machines to run with 100% free software, all the way down to the firmware level.

At the install party, experts will guide you in installing Coreboot with all-free firmware on your machines. Make sure to read the page if you plan to attend the install party, because only a few types of machines will be supported. Even if you can't make it to the conference, you'll find it to be a useful resource about Coreboot.

Do you have a suggestion for next month's featured resource? Let us know at campaigns@fsf.org.

To get announcements of most new GNU releases, subscribe to the info-gnu mailing list: http://lists.gnu.org/mailman/listinfo/info-gnu.

This month, we welcome Mark Veltzer as a new co-maintainer of GNU grep.

I'd like to specially mention Texinfo 5.0, the first release in Texinfo in too many years. It is a complete reimplementation of makeinfo, merging in texi2html features and more, while retaining practical compatibility, primarily thanks to the efforts of Patrice Dumas. The Texinfo home page is http://www.gnu.org/software/texinfo.

By Nick Clifton, from February 24th

The GNU toolchain refers to the part of the GNU system which is used for building programs. These components of GNU are together often on other systems and for compiling programs for other platforms.

The GCC sources are closed to new features at the moment, but there are a few new things to report.

Take action with the FSF

Contributions from thousands of individual members enable the FSF's work. You can contribute by joining at http://www.fsf.org/join. If you're already a member, you can help refer new members (and earn some rewards) by adding a line with your member number to your email signature like:

I'm an FSF member -- Help us support software freedom! http://www.fsf.org/jf?referrer=2442

The FSF is also always looking for volunteers (http://www.fsf.org/volunteer). From rabble-rousing to hacking, from issue coordination to envelope stuffing -- there's something here for everybody to do. Also, head over to our campaign section (http://www.fsf.org/campaigns) and take action on software patents, DRM, free software adoption, OpenDocument, RIAA and more.
